Debbie Mucarsel-Powell Urges U.S. to Aid in the Fight for Democracy in Cuba and Haiti

- Fui la primera sudamericana inmigrante que ha sido elegida para estar en el congreso de los Estados Unidos y lo que yo he estado viendo es que Rick Scott ha sido un extremista. No ha hecho nada para proteger esas oportunidades. Están desapareciendo muy rápidamente aquí en el estado.
- Muchos jóvenes no pueden encontrar buenos trabajos, el costo de vida es demasiado alto, las aseguradoras han estado cobrando muchísimo por el seguro de las propiedades y por eso tenemos que pagar tanto en renta, en hipotecas y no podemos continuar así.
- Una de las cosas más importantes es proteger las oportunidades económicas que deberíamos tener todos en el estado, pero también proteger los beneficios como el Medicare y el Seguro Social. Rick Scott escribió un plan amenazando que iba a terminar y eliminar esos programas que son tan importantes para nuestros padres y nuestros abuelos.
- I was the first South-American immigrant to be elected to the United States Congress and what I have been seeing is that Rick Scott has been an extremist. He has done nothing to protect these opportunities. They are disappearing rapidly here in the state.
- Many young people can’t find good jobs, the cost of living is too high, insurance companies are charging too much for property insurance and that is why we are paying so much for rent, mortgages, and we can’t continue like this.
- One of the most important things is to protect the economic opportunities that we should all have in this state, but also to protect benefits like Medicare and Social Security. Rick Scott wrote a plan threatening to end and eliminate those programs that are so important to our parents and grandparents.

- No tienen acceso a alimentos, no tienen acceso a medicinas y al mismo tiempo están perdiendo sus casas, sus hogares, por estas gangas que se están metiendo adentro. Justamente hoy tuve una conversación con la representante Marie Woodsen que es una haitiana americana que representa un distrito aquí en el estado de la Florida en Tallahassee y está sumamente frustrada de que no tiene el apoyo.
- Por eso, yo estoy de candidata para el senado federal, para tener esa voz en Washington D.C. para asegurarnos de que el congreso actúe inmediatamente no solo para apoyar el pueblo haitiano y tratar de controlar esa situación, que es un tema de seguridad nacional para su pueblo pero también para nuestro país, pero también asegurarnos de que tenemos fondos para la crisis de inmigración.
- Yo fui asesora de la Cumbre de las Américas. Tuvimos un acuerdo de inmigración para hablar con nuestros aliados en el hemisferio porque hay crisis no solo en Haití. Vimos lo que sucedió ayer en Cuba. Hay muchos cubanos que están luchando por su libertad. También no tienen acceso a los alimentos…también lo que está sucediendo en Venezuela, lo que pasó en Ecuador hace unas semanas.
- Teníamos un acuerdo bipartidista en el que Rick Scott votó en contra de la seguridad para la frontera. Tenemos que continuar asegurando la frontera, tenemos que asegurarnos de que personas que tienen otras intenciones de hacer daño aquí en este país no puedan entrar, pero tenemos que tener una manera legal para que estas familias puedan pedir asilo. Eso siempre ha sido parte de nuestra cultura en los Estados Unidos y tenemos que continuar haciendo eso.
- They don’t have access to food, they don’t have access to medicine, and at the same time, they are losing their houses, their homes, because of these gangs that are going inside. Just today, I had a conversation with Representative Marie Woodsen who is a Haitian-American who represents a district here in Florida in Tallahassee and is very frustrated that she does not have support.
- Because of that, I am a candidate for the U.S. Senate, to have a voice in Washington DC to make sure that Congress acts immediately not only to support the Haitian people and try to get the situation under control, which is a matter of national security not only for their people but for our country, but also make sure we have funding for the immigration crisis.
- I was advisor to the Summit of the Americas. We had an immigration agreement to speak with our allies in the hemisphere because the crisis is not only in Haiti. We saw what happened yesterday in Cuba. There are many Cubans who are fighting for their freedom. They also don’t have access to food…and what is happening in Venezuela, what happened in Ecuador a few weeks ago.
- We had a bipartisan agreement that Rick Scott voted against for border security. We have to continue securing the border, we have to make sure that people with bad intentions can’t enter, but we have to have a legal way for families to ask for asylum. That has always been part of our culture in the United States and we must continue doing that.
