Debbie Mucarsel-Powell Slams Shutdown Scott

While Rick Scott proves time and time again that he cares only about his own extreme agenda, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell continues to hold Rick Scott accountable and remind voters of his radical record.

Campaign spokesperson Riya Vashi released the following statement:

“From pushing for a government shutdown to standing in the way of aid to secure our border and national security interests, Rick Scott continues to prove that he’s only here for political games and his own extreme agenda. It’s time to elect a senator who will put Floridians over self-interest every time. Come November, Floridians will fire Rick Scott.”

Tallahassee Democrat: Sen. Rick Scott has yet to show any capability of leadership | Debbie Mucarsel-Powell

  • At a time when the country is grappling with rising costs and multiple wars abroad, the last thing Americans need is a government paralyzed by actions of extreme politicians like Scott. Floridians need a leader who will show up every day and work hard to deliver results for them, solving problems and leaving the state a better place than they found it.
  • The shutdown Scott voted in favor of last week would have forced over 150,000 of Florida’s federal civilian employees and military service members to go without a paycheck to afford groceries, pay the bills, and provide for their families. The shutdown could have forced millions of Floridians to go hungry and could have caused a spike in housing and rent prices.
  • But Scott should prove that he’s capable of being a leader before he runs for the position. He has opposed bipartisan legislation, like the border deal endorsed by the Customs and Border Protection Union and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to reduce gun violence. He’s criticized a leader of his party because of their “approach to working with Democrats.
  • While senators from both parties are coming to the table to talk about funding the government and further avoid hurting working families, Scott is happy to vote against funding, leaving hardworking Floridians to pay the price. Scott and his club of far-right allies have made it their mission to obstruct the legislative process – and they don’t care who stands in the way.
  • The truth is, Scott is out-of-touch and out-of-step with working families in Florida. His “my way or the highway” approach to governing isn’t governing at all. Floridians deserve a leader who will come to the table and work with anyone to deliver for our state and for our country – and Scott cannot be trusted to follow through.

Sun Sentinel: Rick Scott had a chance to confront our border crisis. He turned his back | Opinion

  • The Senate is broken, and it’s because of extremists like Rick Scott who put partisan politics before delivering for the people who elected them. It’s past time to hold him accountable for refusing to keep Floridians safe in the name of scoring cheap political points.
  • Thanks to Scott, our Customs and Border Patrol and ICE agencies are still without support. Because Scott tanked essential funds in the bipartisan border deal, ICE is now preparing to release thousands of detainees and cut detention levels by the tens of thousands.
  • In the face of questions from Bloomberg the other week, Scott couldn’t justify putting partisan politics before our national security. That’s because his decision to vote against border security and put a stop to critical aid that would curb Russian and Chinese interests is unjustifiable.
  • Because of extremists like Scott, Congress is back where it was four months ago, trying to pass essential aid that would support Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan in their fights for democracy. His self-serving approach to governing is the reason Washington is so dysfunctional. Scott has worked harder to further the gridlock in Washington than he has to deliver border security for America.
  • This “my way or the highway” approach is rooted in the fact that Scott doesn’t care about supporting border patrol agents or protecting our borders. That’s because he would rather use this immigration crisis as a tool to score political points in an election year. But Floridians deserve better than a self-serving senator whose only priorities are in furthering his own interests.
