WHAT THEY’RE WATCHING: Rick Scott’s Abortion Ban is Now in Effect, Endangering the Lives of Women

With Rick Scott’s dangerous abortion ban now in effect, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell continues to fight for women’s rights, meeting voters where they are throughout the state.

MSNBC The Reid Out: Florida’s Draconian 6-Week Abortion Ban Now in Effect

  • At the stroke of midnight, millions of women in Florida joined millions more women across the country who just might die because they won’t have access to proper reproductive health care.
  • The next closest available health care haven for Floridians is New Mexico or Virginia. That means that if you are in dire need of stabilizing care, you would have to travel almost a full day to get treatment, knowing full well that you could die.
  • “We are going to have an opportunity to be able to vote in November, to make sure that we protect reproductive rights for women, but it’s not going to mean anything if we re-elect Rick Scott, he goes back to the Senate and pushes for a national abortion ban, because that is exactly their strategy, this is their agenda, and they’re not going to stop here in Florida.”
  • “I don’t want anyone to have any doubt that that will absolutely happen. When I was in Congress, the most extreme Republicans in the caucus were making lines signing onto the Life at Conception bill. Rick Scott has given tens of thousands of dollars to people who were on that bill. His name was on a national abortion ban. Even today, Rick Scott said that he would sign any anti-abortion bill that would come to his desk.”

MSNBC Alex Witt Reports: Florida 6-week Ban Threatens Access Across the South

  • “A woman who came to a clinic and she was told you are one day too late. It was before the abortion ban on Tuesday, but because of a law that Rick Scott passed when he was Governor that mandated a woman to wait 24 hours before having to get this critical health care. She was denied care.”
  • “We’re going to see a high rate of violence against women because of hardly any exceptions. We’re going to see high rates of maternal mortality that disproportionately affects Black women and Latina women here in the state of Florida.”
  • “It’s not going to mean anything if Rick Scott gets his way, goes back to the Senate, and then pushes for a federal ban on abortion for women to be denied this care.”
  • “When Rick Scott says ‘leave it to the states,’ which he said and he celebrated when Arizona passed that draconian law, they mean a total ban on abortion.”

ABC 7: Six Week Abortion Ban Reaction

  • “This should not be a political issue and unfortunately, extremists like Rick Scott, extremists in Tallahassee have made it a political issue by passing the most extreme ban for women to not have access to abortion, access to such critical medical care.”
  • “Here we are now fighting for rights that women fought for more than 50 years ago.”
