Debbie Mucarsel-Powell Hosts Press Call with Haitian-American Community Leaders

Miami, FL – Today, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and State Representative Marie Woodson held a press call to discuss the ongoing violence in Haiti.

“My heart hurts for both the Haitian people as well as the Haitian American community here in Florida who have friends and families at risk right now,” said Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “I know exactly what it feels like to fear for the safety of your home country and of the family you left behind. And I know what it feels like to wish you had an advocate for your community in Washington paying attention. I stand with our Haitian community here in Florida and with the Haitian people, and I am committed to using my platform to uplift the issues important to this community. The instability in Haiti not only threatens the lives of its citizens but also poses a security risk to the United States. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the suffering of our neighbors. The U.S. must step up and do everything in our power to secure democracy in Haiti – for the safety of the Haitian people and for our own national security.”

“As a proud Haitian-American, the crisis unfolding in Haiti not only weighs heavily on my heart, but it also deeply frustrates me,” said Representative Marie Woodson. “I still have family and friends living in the country, and like so many others, they are facing unimaginable obstacles amid the violence gripping the nation. For far too long, Haiti has been neglected and overlooked by the international community. The U.S. cannot turn a blind eye any longer. That’s why we need leaders from Florida and across the nation who are committed to using their positions to uplift our community – and not just in times of crisis. We must continue to advocate for the people of Haiti until they receive the aid and support they so desperately need, developing a coordinated response to the crisis that upholds our values as a nation of immigrants.”
