Debbie Mucarsel-Powell Slams Rick Scott’s Support for Medication Abortion Ban

Scott joined 69 Congressional Republican Extremists in Filing Dangerous Amicus Brief to Ban Medication Abortion Nationally

Scott Co-Sponsored A National Abortion Ban And Backed Florida’s Radical Six Week Ban

MIAMI – Today, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case that could ban access to safe, medical abortions and destroy the FDA’s ability to approve drugs based on scientific evidence – an extreme move that self-serving Rick Scott unapologetically supports.

“Rick Scott has made it clear time and again that he wants a national abortion ban that puts women’s health at risk. Make no mistake: if the Supreme Court decides to ban Mifepristone, it will be because of extremists like Rick Scott,” said Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “Extreme politicians should never insert themselves into our private decisions. This is a deeply personal decision between a woman, her family, and her doctor. While Rick Scott continues to disrespect women and attack our personal rights, I’m fighting to protect our fundamental freedoms in Florida.”

BACKGROUND:

In April, Rick Scott led Republican extremists in Congress by filing an amicus curiae brief to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. US Food & Drug Administration. The brief urged the Court to keep in place the Northern District of Texas’s restrictions of the FDA approval of the abortion drug mifepristone, endangering the health and safety of women.
