Statement: Debbie Mucarsel-Powell Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Miami, FL – Today, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell released the following statement in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month:
“Hispanic heritage is the heritage of my family, the heritage of so many Floridians, and the heritage that contributes so much to our country. Today, as we mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the rich history and contributions Latinos have made to our country. This month reminds us of the incredible diversity and resilience of the Latino community and the unwavering commitment to the United States Latinos have had for generations.
“As an immigrant who arrived in this country at the age of 14 from Ecuador, fleeing violence and pursuing the American Dream, I never dreamed where my life would take me. My mother’s bravery brought us here, believing in a land where everyone has a chance to succeed, regardless of their background. My story is the story of so many Hispanic families across Florida and across our nation.
“This Hispanic Heritage Month is not just a celebration, however. It is also a reminder that many political leaders will use our community to try to score political points — by attacking us and by pandering to us. As we celebrate the Latino community’s contributions to American society, we must continue to fight those who want to tear us apart, and work towards an inclusive and diverse society for all.
“Let us honor the stories of perseverance and ambition within the Latino community. Let us reaffirm our commitment to an America where diversity is cherished, opportunities are abundant, and the American Dream is in reach for all.”
